Why did you become a teacher? I always wanted to be a teacher, even way back in elementary school. I think it had to do with a wonderful teacher I had in third grade, Mrs. Wimmer. She was warm, caring, and fun. I loved spending time at recess talking to her about her job. I learned to love learning from Mrs. Wimmer and wanted to grow up to be just like her.

What goals do you have for your students? One goal I have for my students is to be able to think things through for themselves. They are growing up and won’t always have someone around to tell them how to do things. It’s important for them to learn to think independently.

What do you encourage parents to do at home to help their children strengthen particular skills? One thing parents can do to help their children is to instill a love of reading. They can do this by showing an interest in the books they read. Take them to the library on a regular basis. Ask them about books they have read at home and at school. Read books with them and to them. Show them that reading is important.

Name your favorite movie. I have seen lots of movies through the years, but I always go back to the same one. I have watched it hundreds of times, and it never gets old … “The Wizard of Oz.”

Name your favorite musician or band. I don’t really have a favorite musician or band. If I listen to music, it’s usually soft rock. No country music for me, please.

What’s something your students might not know about you?

I played the clarinet in the Shamrock Showband at Westfield High School and went on to play in the Ball State Marching Band in college. It was a great experience. I learned a lot, and met some awesome people.
