Five years after opening its first resale boutique in Fishers, all three Simply Chic locations are buying and selling maternity fashions.

“To me it was the one category of clothing that makes the most sense,” said Marlena Miniel, store manager at the Hazel Dell location. “It’s not something that’s worn long-term, so it seems like a perfect market for resale.”

Miniel said customers regularly inquired about maternity fashions, and many regulars are breathing a sigh of relief now that they are able to earn cash on the spot for their gently used maternity clothes.

Once the resale boutique posted a message on the Indy Moms group on social media, the fashions started coming in.

“Literally the next day we got a bump in people coming in with clothes,” Miniel said, explaining the activity has been fairly consistent across all three locations.

“When it comes to style, maternity is more open compared to regular clothing,” she said. “We’ve gotten everything from Gap Maternity to Jessica Simpson Maternity.”

She said the boutique typically purchases styles only a few years old, but they are more lenient with maternity fashion since many pieces come to them in near new condition.

Although the stores are currently purchasing all styles, a heavy demand exists for dresses and tops. “We’re actually putting out everything we get regardless of what season it is, so people can buy things they know they’ll need for the winter months.”

The buying process is straightforward. Customers can bring clothes they wish to sell in a tote, laundry basket or shopping bag, choosing to wait in the store or return before the end of the day for the items to be assessed. Cash is paid up to $100 for the portion the boutique agrees to buy, and checks are issued for greater amounts.
